Work being part of a large collection of mythological masks (Minerva, Mercury, Bacchus, etc etc).
The myth speaks of an enormous lion that tormented the people of Nemea whose fur was impenetrable by weapons, because it could not be wounded by iron, bronze or stone and it was necessary only the strength of the human hand for its submission. Only Hercules succeeded in killing it, later Hercules skinned the lion and used the fur for himself, obtaining an invincible defense against the new dangers he would face.
