Exceptional Verona Red marble high-relief depicting St. Michael the Archangel and Lucifer, worked and carved by hand.
The work captures the moment in which the Saint is about to pierce with his sword the demon, Lucifer, with the intent to drive him out of the kingdom of heaven. The images of the Archangel Michael driving out the demon are allegorical. The angels try to oppose his work in the world.
Lucifer would have been the most important of the angels, but he did not want to depend on God, so Hell was born, because God to give his creature what he wanted, he drove him out of his realm and allowed him to become the God of his own kingdom, or Hell.
The work comes from a private collection in the city of Venice, a collection that collected in a large hall beautiful marble works of saints and religious figures. In particular this sculpture was coupled with another depicting St. George (they were often depicted together).
To underline the care of details and particulars (incredible fineness of the face, hands, wings and clothes), the majesty of the creation transmits strength and light.
Above the veining and patina of marble, a real wedding favor.
