Magnificent Habsburg coat of arms in Istrian marble depicting the double-headed eagle with St. George in the center. From Northern Italy, private collection, 19th century.
Exceptional and unique workmanship, remarkable care and precision of detail, phenomenal care of the anatomy of the animals, from claws, plumage, etc..
Fascinating the remaining decorations, optimal if hung on the wall.
In the center is St. George, on horseback in the act of slaying the dragon.
The two-headed eagle was adopted as the imperial coat of arms for the first time by the Roman emperor Constantine I, called the Great, and then remained as the coat of arms in the Eastern Roman Empire until the last dynasty of Byzantine emperors. Today, the Greek Orthodox Church uses the double-headed eagle as a legacy of the Byzantines. The same coat of arms was later used by the Habsburgs, emperors of Austria and kings of Hungary, and the Romanovs, tsars of all the Russias.
