Prestigious Bas-relief in Carrara Marble depicting the Lion of St. Mark with the Book open. The work has been completely worked and carved by hand. Comes from Venice, private collection.
To emphasize the precision, attention to detail and definition of details. The anatomy of the lion is carved with great accuracy (nails, muscles, mane and wings).
There are many possible symbolic interpretations of the combination of lion and book, in this case, the only open book is considered a symbol of state sovereignty.
However these interpretations are not universally accepted as the Serenissima never codified its symbols represented in a univocal way.
The gospel has engraved the classic Latin phrase that translated means "Peace to you, Mark, my Evangelist".
Of medium size, well proportioned and appropriate weight. It can be hung on the wall very easily with the help of some irons. Its medium size allows for easy placement, especially inside the home, but also outside.
The object is in excellent condition, completely intact in all its parts.
