Spectacular bronze triptych depicting the god Neptune in the center with two allegorical figures at his sides. The bronze complex is signed with author E. Avolio (1876-1929). Provenance Venice, private collection, period end 19th century. The god Neptune appears depicted together with figures of horses, animals that show a lower part in the shape of fish. In classical mythology, the oceans (and masses of water in general) represented desires: water is ungovernable and elusive as desire, Neptune is its supreme deity. The horse is linked to the concept of desire, is the animal that needs a proper guidance otherwise it can make disasters (Phaeton teaches us something). So the horses are often approached to Neptune almost to emphasize its quality of personification of human desire that can destabilize. Neptune appropriates the function of the god of wisdom, the one who can teach us to dominate the passions and drives that agitate us like boats in the sea.
