Hutton-Clarke Antiques is pleased to offer for sale a striking Victorian pine chest with later maritime paintwork. Dating from the mid to late 19th century, this chest has been enhanced with bold decorative naval motifs, making it a unique and eye-catching piece.
The front is painted with a large central roundel depicting a full-rigged ship beneath crossed Union flags, encircled with a laurel wreath and topped with an anchor. It bears the inscription “Capt. Wm. Somers – H.M.S. Leopard”, while the top is adorned with a scrolling ribbon reading “Queen & Country” over the initials R.N. (Royal Navy). Decorative gilded flourishes and rope-edge borders complete the design, with original turned knob handles highlighted in red.
