Totem sculpture in burnt oak by the Belgian artist Jacky De Maeyer, born in 1938 in Ostend. The sculpture has an anthropomorphic form with influences from African art, and dates from 1971. Jacky De Maeyer was born in Ostend in 1938. He has his studio in his native city and in Gordes (France). Since 1960 his work has been shown in over 300 solo and group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, including in the United States, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Greece and Korea. A number of monumental sculptures can be seen in different public places. The stylised shapes evoke, on the one hand, an archaic world of signs and symbols and on the other hand, a common spirit with the cultures of Africa and Oceania. In his oak sculptures, Jacky De Maeyer draws his inspiration from the organic world, stylising it into forms that are a synthesis between organic and geometric; ovals, pyramids, spheres are built up vertically in undulating or straight lines, either in a totemic symmetry or using an asymmetry that creates a harmonious tension.

Large copper bathing jar - 18th C

Large copper bathing jar, France 18th century. This jar is made from hammered copper and has lots of character. There are some nice details such as the weathered copper which gives a red and green patina, the handle with fingerprints and the balance between the matt and shiny surface of the copper. The jar has some traces of time and is designed in a very decorative way. Can be used as a vase. These bathing jars were used in the 18th century to fill the copper baths with hot water.

Exceptional large 17th C Spanish Corpus Christi

Exceptional and large 17th C Spanish Corpus Christi. Made of limewood and delicately sculpted with high quality details. The elongated, thin and stretched anatomical features contribute to the overall feeling of fragility of this Christ. The corpus has beautiful rests of Polychrome, paint, cracks in the wood, and some traces of time. The anatomical elements such as the ribs, toes, tendons, and knees are very finely sculpted for such a large statue. The head and face are expressive thanks to the detailing of the hair, eyes, and mouth with teeth, which is very rare. The forged elements, such as the nail through the feet and the original suspension bracket with forged nails, are still present. Parts of the old connecting plugs to the arms are also still present. This version of a corpus christ is representing a suffering christ with serene expression.

Saint Peter as first pope - early 16th C

Late gothic wooden (limewood) sculpture of Saint Peter as first pope. Representation of Saint Peter crowned with the papal tiara. Normally right hand is blessing the observer, while the left holds an impressive key, an iconographic attribute of the saint entrusted with guarding the gates of heaven, this sculpture is missing hands because of the iconoclasm in the 16th C. He wears a tunic and robe that falls over his knees in several folds, with traces of colour in red and gold tones (the latter mostly on the tiara, beard and key). The figure’s hieratic position is well suited to the image of Peter, the ‘bedrock’ of the Christian church, reflecting the dignity bestowed on him by the fact that he was the first Supreme Pontiff. Origin Northern France, between 1500 - 1550.

19th C articulated santos

Wooden articulated Santos figure, 19th C Italian. In original condition with traces of paint and wooden head covered with plaster. In operating condition without restorations. Delicately sculpted and well detailed, the ribs, tones, fingers, ears and even the nails are clearly visible. The head has a nice patina and some traces of use.

Early 17th C Corpus Christ

Early 17th Corpus Christ, made of oak, origin Germany between 1600 and 1650. This corpus christ with beautiful suffering expression has a lot of patina with polychrome remnants in the colors, white, red and blue. The drapery, crown, face and anatomical details are still visible and delicately sculpted. Mounted on a custom made iron base.

Unfinished corpus christ - early 20th C

Unfinished large corpus christ, made of oak. This corpus christ was found in the workshop of a sculptor who was known for creating religious statues and busts of people in the Netherlands. Probably early 20th century. This sculpture has a non-detailed strong expression with the clear lines of a corpus christ, also the wood has a beautiful worn and grey patina.

Cubist ceramic sculpture by Paul De Bruyne (1936-2007)

Cubist ceramic sculpture representing a reclining figure. Very nice combination of straight lines and solid shapes with small details such as 2 eyes. Made from heavy chamote clay and unique piece. 1970' s and signed by Paul De Bruyne (Belgium 1936-2007). Graduated at the Higher Institute Sint-Lukas in Ghent. And was a teacher at the Royal Academy and the Sint-Lukas Institute in Oudenaarde and at the Sint-Barbara College in Ghent. De Bruyne created an oeuvre as a ceramist, in which he also considered ceramics as a part of architecture and interior design. This led to the realization of works of art, utensils, ornaments and ceramic sculpture, integrated into architecture. Almost all his works were inspired by humanity and society of the 1960s and 1970s.

This candlestick is modularly constructed from 4 parts with a central attachment point, allowing you to play with the order and heights of the arms. Made by Bonduel for a modernist chapel in Belgium, unique piece. From 1961 to 1966, Roger Bonduel taught visual art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bruges. Bonduel became best known for its sculptures, furniture, and bas-reliefs. He used nickel, copper, steel, silver, brass and bronze. He played an important role in the revival of religious art. Known for his mastery of metal, Bonduel, who collaborated with modernist architect Paul Felix and glass artist Michel Martens, brought energy and movement to each piece he created.
