De slang: In de wet verwijst het naar voorzichtigheid, wijsheid en waarheid. Justitia vertrapt de slang met haar voet, wat betekent afstand nemen van de zonde (de erfzonde, die geassocieerd wordt met de Bijbelse slangafbeelding), en verleiding vermijden.
